Well Maintenance: Ensuring Your Water's Health and Equipment Longevity

Well Maintenance: Ensuring Your Health

Having a well means you have a natural source of water. It's like having a mini water supply company right in your backyard. But just like a garden that needs watering or a pet that needs feeding, your well needs care to keep giving you clean and safe water. Let's dive into the world of well maintenance, where we'll discover how to keep your well safe and the water healthy, and your equipment long lasting  and reliable. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks regulates who can work on wells by issuing Well Contractors Licenses . Call the Plumbing Doctor is a licensed Well Contractor- we have been licensed by the Ministry for over 25 years.

The Secret World of Your Well

Imagine your well as a big straw that goes deep into the ground to sip water from beneath the earth. This water is what you use for drinking, bathing, and maybe even watering your plants. But for the straw to work well and give you clean water, it needs some looking after.

Keeping the Water Clean- be "Well Aware" and protect your well (Be Well Aware: Information for private well owners - Canada.ca)

The first step to a healthy well is making sure the water stays clean. Here's how you can do that: Protect well from contamination by

1. Monitoring  What's Around Your Well: Make sure there's no paint, fertilizer, or harmful chemicals stored up hill of or near your well. These can seep into the ground and contaminate the water you drink.  Keep animals and livestock and their excrement away from your well and make sure your septic system is working correctly. Finally, make sure the ground around your well slopes away from the well to avoid ground water from running into or pooling  and contaminating the  well

2. Keep It Covered: Your well has a cap or cover on top. This helps keep out bugs, leaves, and dirt. Always check to make sure this cap is in good shape and tightly secured and that there is no gap between the well casing (the straw that goes into the ground) and the ground.. A well needs to breathe, make sure the vents of the cap are not blocked.

3. Test Your Water: At least once a year and at any other time  you suspect your well may have been contaminated (flood or chemical spill near the well). it's a good idea to test your water to make sure it's safe to drink. You can test for things like bacteria and chemicals. If anything not good is found, you can take steps to make the water clean again. if your well has been contaminated with bacteria you can shock your well. Call The Plumbing Doctor is a well contractor and can help you with testing and shocking your sell. We also can assess and install the right equipment to ensure your water is safe to drink or the right well pump equipment to ensure good flow and pressure of water from your well.

4. Keep your well equipment in good working order

Taking Care of Your Well Equipment

Just like a car that needs oil changes and tire checks, your well has equipment that needs looking after:

1. Annual Checkup: Once a year, it's smart to have a well expert visit and check your well's equipment. They'll make sure everything is working properly and fix any small problems before they become big ones.

2. Watch for Signs of Trouble: Sometimes your well might tell you it's not feeling well. If your water looks strange, tastes funny, or if your water pressure is low or not consistent, or water pump seems to be runnigntoo long or turning on and off frequently, it's time to call for help.

3. Protecting Your Well in Winter: If you live in a place where it gets very cold, your well needs a cozy jacket. Well, not really a jacket, but you do need to make sure it doesn't freeze. Some people use special covers or insulated bags to keep their wells warm in winter.

When to Call the Professionals

Even though there are things you can do on your own to take care of your well, sometimes you need to call in the experts. If you're not sure about something, if your water suddenly changes, you think or are concerned your well is contaminated or if it's time for your annual checkup, a professional well service can help.
