FAQs

  • How often should a septic system be maintained?

Regular maintenance of a septic system is crucial for its optimal functioning and longevity. It's generally recommended that a septic system should be inspected by professionals at least once every three years. However, the frequency can vary depending on several factors such as the size of your household, total wastewater generated, amount of solids in wastewater, and the size of your septic tank.

Regular maintenance not only helps to prevent any potential issues but also ensures that your system operates effectively. If you have a garbage disposal or heavy water usage in your home, you may need to pump out your septic tank more frequently. Always consult with a professional service provider who can assess your specific situation and provide appropriate guidance.

  • What are common signs of a failing septic system?

Several signs could indicate that your septic system needs repair. Some common symptoms include:

    1. Foul Smelling Drains or Backyard: If there is an unpleasant odour coming from your drains or the area near the tank in your yard, it could mean that your septic system's drains are blocked or the tank needs servicing.

    2. Sewage Backup: When sewage starts backing up into your toilets or other drains in the house, this indicates a blockage in your system.

    3. Water Pooling On Your Lawn: Smelly water pooling in your yard near the septic tank suggests that there may be a leak in your septic system, that your septic tank is full, or that your weeping bed is saturated.

    4. Slow Drains: If all the drains in your house are slow, there is likely a clog in your septic system.

    5. Lush Green Grass Over Drain Field: If you notice unusually green and spongy grass over the drain field even during dry weather, it may indicate that you have a problem with your septic system.

    6. Frequent Diarrhea or Illness within the Household: This could be a sign of E.coli bacteria leaking out of the system and contaminating local water sources.

    7. Gurgling Sounds in Plumbing System: When you hear gurgling sounds from your sinks, toilets and bathtub drains, it can be a sign of blockage somewhere within the septic system.

These symptoms often point to an issue with the septic system such as a blockage or failure in some part of the system. Unattended issues can lead to more significant problems and costly repairs over time. Therefore, if you notice any unusual changes or problems related to your plumbing or drainage systems, it's best to contact our professionals promptly for assessment and repair.

  • What does routine septic system maintenance entail?

Routine maintenance for a septic system involves several steps designed to keep it functioning optimally. This typically includes pumping out the tank which helps remove solid waste build-up preventing it from clogging up the entire system causing severe damage that would require expensive repairs.

The second phase of maintenance usually involves inspecting all components of the septic system including tanks, pipes and drain fields for any signs of wear or damage. This includes checking baffles and tees, effluent screens, motors and other electrical parts, floats switches among others. If any issues are detected during inspection, necessary repairs or replacements are carried out to prevent future problems.

  • Can I handle minor septic system repairs by myself?

While minor septic system issues might seem manageable, it's always best to leave any repairs to professional service providers. This is because septic systems are complex and require specialized knowledge and tools for proper handling. Attempting to fix issues on your own could lead to more serious complications and even regulatory violations.

Moreover, working with a septic system can pose health risks if not handled correctly due to the potential exposure to harmful bacteria present in waste material. Therefore, even if the repair appears minor, it's advised that you contact a reputable service provider who has the skills, experience and equipment necessary for safe and effective repair work.

Alongside septic system repairs, we also excel in septic system design and installation.
