FAQs

  • What is a water softener & is it necessary to have one in my home?

A water softener is an essential household device that eliminates the effects of hard water. Hard water contains high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium, which can cause various issues in your home, such as scale build-up in pipes and appliances which impacts their performance and reduces their lifespan.

The water softener works by a process called ion exchange, replacing these hard minerals with sodium. This process results in softer water which is better for your skin and hair, extends the lifespan of your appliances, and improves the effectiveness of soaps and detergents.

    Why it's necessary

The need for a water softener depends on the hardness level of your local water supply. Our water filtration services include assessing your water quality.

If you live in an area with hard or very hard water (7 grains per gallon or higher), then installing a water softener could bring significant benefits including better appliance efficiency, improved skin and hair health, and cost savings from less detergent usage.

However, if your local supply has lower hardness levels (generally below 3 3 grains per gallon or less), then a softening system might not be needed.

    Impacts of not having one

Without a water softener in areas with a hard water supply, you may face several issues over time. Over time there will be hard water scale build-up in plumbing pipes, fixtures and appliances. Scale build-up in pipes will reduce water flow scale build-up damages the finish on taps and impacts the performance and lifespan of appliances like dishwashers, washing machines or hot-water heaters.

In addition, hard water can leave spots on dishes and fixtures, make laundry feel stiff or dull-coloured, cause soap scum build-up in showers and sinks and potentially lead to dry skin and hair. Over time, these issues can result in added costs for appliance repair or replacement, increased energy usage and higher expenditure on cleaning products.

  • How often should a water softener be serviced?

Typically, it is recommended to have your water tested once a year to assess the performance of your water-softening system.

More frequent maintenance might be needed depending on your household's water usage and the hardness level of your local water supply.

Beyond providing excellent water softener systems, we also offer UV lights and water conditioning options.

  • Can't I install my water softener?

While technically possible for someone skilled in plumbing tasks to install their water softener, it is generally recommended to have this done by a professional plumber due to its complexity. Installation involves many steps including cutting into pipes, installing valves, and setting up drainage systems.

Improper installation of a water softener could lead to leaks or inefficient operation which could ultimately cost more in repairs down the line. Our professionals have experience with local codes and regulations ensuring safe installation while also being able to provide warranties for their work - offering peace of mind that if anything goes wrong it will be taken care of promptly and effectively.

  • What are the signs that my water softener needs repair or replacement?

There are several telltale signs that your water softener may need repair or replacement. If you start noticing changes such as spots on dishes, scale build-up in your toilet, dry skin and hair, or dull laundry, it might be an indication that the system is not working properly.

On a more technical level, if you notice that the unit is using more salt than usual or if the system is not regenerating even when set to do so, it's likely time for a service call. Keep in mind that most water softeners have a lifespan of 10-15 years. If your system is within this range and experiencing issues, it might be more cost-effective to replace rather than repair.
