FAQs

  • What is the lifespan of a septic system?

Septic systems are designed to provide long-term, effective treatment of household waste when properly installed and maintained. The lifespan of a septic system can vary greatly depending on several factors including the design of the system, soil conditions, the quality of installation, and maintenance practices. On average, conventional septic systems can last between 25 to 30 years.

However, alternative systems with electrical float switches, pumps or mechanical components should be inspected more often. Regular servicing and pumping will significantly extend the life span of your septic system. It's also important to note that all systems will require replacement at some point but proper care can help you get the most out of your investment.

  • Can I install a septic system myself?

Only those licensed by the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs of Ontario can design and install septic systems. Additionally, all new septic system installations require a permit and must be inspected by the Local Health Inspector.

Installing a septic system is an intricate job that requires professional knowledge, expertise and the right equipment. This process involves careful planning, digging, placing the tank properly and setting up the drain field correctly. In addition, various local regulations regarding septic systems need to be adhered to during installation.

While it may be tempting for DIY enthusiasts to undertake this project themselves, it's highly recommended that you hire professionals for this task. Mistakes made during installation can lead to serious problems down the line including contamination of your drinking water or failure of the system itself which can be very expensive to correct.

  • Can I build over or near my septic system?

It's generally not recommended to build anything over or near your septic system. This includes structures like decks, patios, pools and even sheds. Building over your septic system can lead to compacted soil which can impact the functioning of the drain field.

Furthermore, heavy structures can damage the tank and pipes leading to costly repairs. It's also important to ensure easy access to the system for maintenance activities and potential repairs.

  • Do all homes require a septic system & how much space is needed to install one?

The space required for a septic system depends on numerous factors including the size of your home, the number of bathrooms, the type of soil in your yard, the size of the tank, drainage field requirements and local regulations. Typically, for an average three-bedroom house, you'll need about half an acre or 500-750 square feet for the drain field alone.

It's also necessary to consider setback requirements from your home, property lines and water sources. Therefore, it's essential to engage with professionals who understand these requirements and can effectively guide you through this process.

Not all homes require a septic system. If a home is located within city limits where municipal sewage systems are available, then they would be connected to these rather than needing a separate septic system.

However, homes located in rural areas where there is no access to municipal sewage systems typically require their onsite waste management solution which is often a septic system. Whether you need a septic system depends on your location and local regulations.
