10 Plumbing Tips Everyone Should Know!

  1. Know where the main shut-off valve and main drain are in your home
  2. Before drilling holes in walls, floors or ceilings check for water and drainpipes to avoid accidentally puncturing them
  3. Only flush toilet paper! Anything other than toilet paper can cause a clogged drain! Beware even “flushable “baby wipes clog drains!
  4. Do not use your toilet as a garbage can. Do not flush coffee grinds, cigarette butts, food, food grease or other food items
  5. Invest in a good plunger to clear clogged toilets, sinks and drains
  6. Use a wet vacuum to dislodge small objects (toothbrush, comb) dropped in a drain, don’t plunge it will only push the object further down.
  7. Don’t ignore leaks, that small drip, drip is costing you money!
  8. Hand tighten fittings and connections to avoid breaking bolts and stripping screws
  9. When doing plumbing projects avoid leaks but sealing pipe threads with White Plumbers T tape (Teflon tape) 
  10. Periodically check for leaks under sinks, around drains and the ceilings below kitchens and bathrooms

Things your plumber wished you knew

  1. Do not pour grease down the sink drain
  2. Avoid using caustic drain cleaners, they can damage the pipes and cause injury to the person working on the drain
  3. When its cold leave taps located on outside walls dripping to avoid frozen pipes
  4. Protect your drain traps, avoid storing large items under the sinks that can apply pressure or hit and damage the trap
  5. If you have a garbage disposal read the instructions to avoid clogs
  6. Shut off the water to your home before leaving on vacation
  7. Don’t ignore water around the base of your toilet
